The Country
Landscape Zones
Following
habitat accounts are almost entirely based on the comprehensive and
detailed description of Armenian landscape zones presented in the fundamental Fauna of the Armenian SSR by S. K. Dahl (1954)
- a 'bible' of the Armenian ornithologist and vertebrate zoologist. Here we
outline a concise English version of the original
extensive habitat descriptions in order to offer a general insight into
Armenian land characteristics.
Additional
basic maps below show Armenia's landscape zones, main waterbodies,
mountain ranges and provinces, mentioned in the habitat descriptions
and image gallery. These are provided only for general reference. Links
to a number of detailed maps are provided on the Useful Resources page.
Landscape zones in Armenia are represented by the following:
Dry Subtropics
Semideserts
Mountain Steppes
Forests
Mountain Meadows
Extrazonal Habitats, including: Skeletal Mountains, Crags & Screes, and Wetlands
